Abstract:

Echo is a work for video inspired by my interest in the natural spoken voice as a vehicle for

musical treatment, and in narrative as a basis for meaningful work. The piece is the setting of a

documentary recording of a woman relating her mother's suicide as it occurred during the Northeast

Blackout in 2003. The work addresses the legitimacy of personal narrative as art, and the expressive possibilities of vernacular speech in music. The format of the work is Apple QuickTime. Swim and Glitter, its companion piece, is an elegiac reinterpretation of the themes of Echo composed for 2 violins, guitar, synthesizer, and sampler.
