Abstract

This paper explores the advent of black sororities at Duke University in the mid 1970s including, but not limited to: the reasons for their formation, the challenges the founding members faced in founding them, the reaction of the administration and the larger campus body, and the influence of the organizations on their members. Information is drawn from extensive research done in the Duke archives and oral histories with relevant people.
