Item Open Access An Analysis of Cree's 2016 Scope 3 Greenhouse Gas Emissions(2018-04-26) Lesser, BobbiCree is a lighting and semi-conductor company headquartered in Durham, North Carolina. In an effort to increase their understanding of their company’s environmental footprint, Cree requested a calculation and analysis of their Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. This study used data provided by Cree to calculate the company’s Cree’s Scope 3 emissions in four areas: commercial and consumer lighting products use; the end-of-life for commercial and consumer lighting products; waste generated from direct manufacturing processes; and the transportation and distribution of products. Our analysis determined that the product use phase generated the greatest amount of Scope 3 emissions in 2016. Excluding the use phase, the transportation and distribution phase created the percentage of emissions. Based on these calculations, the team provided a set of recommendations advising Cree on how they can reduce their Scope 3 emissions. The methodology and dataset created by the team can be used by Cree for future studies.Item Open Access Evaluating Upstream Scope 3 Emissions and Setting Science-Based Targets for Cree Inc.(2020-04-24) McCormack, Ben; Zhang, Mingyu; Yan, LuofeiCree Inc. is a manufacturing company headquartered in Durham, North Carolina that produces LED, power and radio frequency products. Using data provided by Cree and an emissions calculation tool based on input-output LCA provided by Quantis and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, we calculated Cree’s upstream scope 3 emissions. This included the following categories: Purchased Goods and Services, Capital Goods, Fuel and Energy-Related Activities Not Included in scope 1 or scope 2, Upstream Transport, and Employee Commuting. These calculations built off of previous collaborations with Duke student teams and completed an inventory of Cree’s scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. We then modeled science-based targets using a twelve-year timeline and based on a 1.5° Celsius global warming projection scenario. Our team supplemented this data by providing Cree with case study observations and next step recommendations for how to implement the suggested targets and achieve the necessary emissions reductions.Item Open Access Roadmap for Achieving Biogen’s Scope 3 Science-Based Target(2019-04-25) Barnes, Madison; Barry, Dieynabou; Coral Castellanos, Temis; Meltzer, JeffreyBiogen has set a Science-Based Target (SBT) to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 35 percent across its entire value chain (scopes 1, 2, and 3) by 2030 from a 2013 base-year. In this project, we focused primarily on scope 3 emissions for two reasons: (1) 70 percent of Biogen’s total emissions fall under scope 3 and (2) scope 3 emissions are the most difficult to reduce because suppliers are chiefly responsible for them and Biogen has little direct control over these emissions. This project provides recommendations for Biogen to meet its scope 3 emissions reduction goal. Through industry research, interviews with experts, and analyses of general supply chain emissions reductions trends and company data, we developed an internal, external, and industry-wide roadmap that identifies the most critical business practices to reaching Biogen’s SBT. Our research shows that these recommendations will strengthen Biogen’s reputation as a sustainability leader, attract and retain investors, mitigate climate-related risks to its business operations, and lead to higher financial performance.
