Item Open Access Eating Difficulties among Older Adults with Dementia in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Scoping Review.(International journal of environmental research and public health, 2021-09) Jung, Dukyoo; Lee, Kyuri; De Gagne, Jennie C; Lee, Minkyung; Lee, Hyesoon; Yoo, Leeho; Won, Sarah; Choi, EunjuThis paper reports a scoping review of the literature on eating difficulties among older adults with dementia in long-term care facilities to identify key concepts, methods of measuring outcomes, interventions, and related factors. A scoping review was performed using the bibliographic databases PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library. A combination of keywords and subject headings related to eating or feeding difficulties was used. Inclusion criteria were limited to materials published in English. A total of 1070 references were retrieved, of which 39 articles were selected after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Articles that met the criteria were published between 1987 and 2020. "Eating disabilities" have been defined as problems related to choosing food and/or the ability to get food to one's mouth, chew, and swallow. Interventions for eating difficulties described in the literature include spaced retrieval training, Montessori training, and feeding skill training. Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental factors related to eating difficulties were identified. This scoping review will provide direct care workers, nursing educators, and administrators with an overview of eating performance and a broad understanding of eating difficulties for older adults with dementia in long-term care facilities.Item Open Access Safe Interorganizational Health Information Exchange During the COVID-19 Pandemic.(Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, 2020-12) Wong, Serena P; Jacobson, Heather N; Massengill, Jennifer; White, Heidi K; Yanamadala, MamataAccurate and timely transmission of medical records between skilled nursing facilities and acute care settings has been logistically problematic. Often people are sent to the hospital with a packet of paper records, which is easily misplaced. The COVID-19 pandemic has further magnified this problem by the possibility of viral transmission via fomites. To protect themselves, staff and providers were donning personal protective equipment to review paper records, which was time-consuming and wasteful. We describe an innovative process developed by a team of hospital leadership, members of a local collaborative of skilled nursing facilities, and leadership of this collaborative group, to address this problem. Many possible solutions were suggested and reviewed. We describe the reasons for selecting our final document transfer process and how it was implemented. The critical success factors are also delineated. Other health systems and collaborative groups of skilled nursing facilities may benefit from implementing similar processes.Item Open Access Spatial distribution of bednet coverage under routine distribution through the public health sector in a rural district in Kenya.(PLoS One, 2011) O'Meara, Wendy Prudhomme; Smith, Nathan; Ekal, Emmanuel; Cole, Donald; Ndege, SamsonInsecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are one of the most important and cost-effective tools for malaria control. Maximizing individual and community benefit from ITNs requires high population-based coverage. Several mechanisms are used to distribute ITNs, including health facility-based targeted distribution to high-risk groups; community-based mass distribution; social marketing with or without private sector subsidies; and integrating ITN delivery with other public health interventions. The objective of this analysis is to describe bednet coverage in a district in western Kenya where the primary mechanism for distribution is to pregnant women and infants who attend antenatal and immunization clinics. We use data from a population-based census to examine the extent of, and factors correlated with, ownership of bednets. We use both multivariable logistic regression and spatial techniques to explore the relationship between household bednet ownership and sociodemographic and geographic variables. We show that only 21% of households own any bednets, far lower than the national average, and that ownership is not significantly higher amongst pregnant women attending antenatal clinic. We also show that coverage is spatially heterogeneous with less than 2% of the population residing in zones with adequate coverage to experience indirect effects of ITN protection.
