Item Open Access Communion of Incorruption: A Theology of Icons and Relics(2020) Taylor, Carole LynetteThis dissertation contributes to contemporary scholarship on the historical and theological significance of Christian iconodulia—the appropriate veneration of holy persons, places, and things. By accentuating the economic aspect of the Byzantine image debates it illustrates how the concerns raised by those defending the holy images in the eighth and ninth centuries proved to be precisely the issues that would accompany the resurgence of Christian iconoclasm in the Protestant Reformation. What should be clearer from the standpoint of this study is that debates concerning the legitimacy of the production and veneration of holy images touch on the fundamental claims of the Christian faith as at the heart of the theological defense is the mystery of God-made-man and the implications of this mystery for how God continues to seek union through his own body, that is, in the sacrifice of the Eucharist and in the Church itself. Attending closely to the economic aspect of the theological defense of iconodulia, we can see that the “economic appropriation” of the incarnation funds theological claims about the ontological stability, or unicity, of the Church. That is to say, to speak about the history and theology of iconodulia in the Christian tradition one must acknowledge the ecclesiological claims inherent to the orthodox defense. Therefore, this dissertation also contributes to contemporary ecumenical discussions and challenges some of the presumptions at the heart of that discussion.

Item Open Access Reclaiming Self: An Augustinian Understanding of the Importance and Power of the imago Dei.(2021) Cantalupo, SantinoThe following work explores identity from overlapping vantage points; biblical/theological, historical and practical to establish a robust understanding of identity in our present time. This thesis explores the ontological elements of God and the meaning of “image bearer” through Scripture in Genesis 1-2; Psalm 8; an overview of Wisdom Literature in Job and Ecclesiastes; and the New Testament in Ephesians and Colossians. From a historical view, this thesis focuses on the work of St. Augustine and how humanity was “naturally created” in the imago Dei. Even those that are not Christ followers share in the imago Dei, as hidden as it may be, to be discovered and set free. Through this process, we see holiness (in contradistinction to morality) as foundational to our existence and reflective of God. Holiness is expressed through love in its proper order. For Augustine, our love of God conditions our love for all other things. This establishes an objective starting point, fundamental to all Christians, a proper understanding and embodiment of the Great Commandment. Finally, by practically applying a fresh understanding of one’s identity, humanity has an opportunity to thrive by acknowledging the positive implications of the embracing and embodiment of the imago Dei.The primary methodology of this thesis is through interpreting Scripture in light of the question, “what does it mean to be created in the imago Dei?” Using the work of the early Church Fathers such as Ambrose and Augustine give interpretive grounding to passages in both Old and New Testaments. Reading both primary and secondary sources on the imago Dei and its impact upon humankind and specifically the Church. Lastly, incorporating and integrating the work of modern psychology in understanding the modern person in light of the creative work of God in the beginning to our current day.

Item Open Access The Crevice Dwellers: Using Image and Story to Communicate Climate Change(2013-04-23) Hoogerwerf, ColinBecause climate change has become a widely discussed topic, it is important to think about how the scientific knowledge of climate change is received by the general public. Up to this point, science has not always been effective at communicating climate change to the general public. Because it is an issue that requires public support and behavior change, it is important that we use all the tools available to us to communicate climate change. One tool that is often overlooked is art. Art has the power to connect emotionally and can translate complicated and abstract ideas into images and stories that can be understood by those not trained in science. In this project I explore the artistic communication of climate change by participating in the dialogue. I created several communications pieces focused on the Green Salamander, a North Carolina species that is threatened by climate change. The research is driven by the creative process and the journey of the project becomes an important part of the project itself. Through literature reviews, interviews, and case studies of artistic representations of climate change I explore the possibilities of expanding climate change communication to use image and story and therefore better connect people to the reality of a changing climate and the potential outcomes. The results of the project come in the form of several creative pieces that explore how one might go about communicating climate change in this way. The work uses photography and writing in several different formats to explore how different genres and different presentations affect the audience’s response to the work. Each piece helped to illuminate the benefits as well as the limitations of using image and story to communicate climate change. I conclude that the collaboration of artists and scientists in communicating climate change has the potential to, not only increase awareness of climate change, but to connect people to emotionally to the effects of climate change.
