Item Open Access Accrual Noise Ratio as a Measure of Accrual Reliability(2009) Njoroge, KennethI develop an empirical model that estimates a firm-specific accrual noise ratio (ANR), an operational and statistically grounded measure of accrual reliability, and test the measure's construct validity. The model allows accrual reliability to vary across firms, which is particularly important because many reliability determinants vary in cross-section. Unlike metrics that measure relative perceived reliability, ANR measures accrual reliability independent of the perceptions of investors, creditors or auditors. I find that ANR relates in expected ways with multiple proxies of accounting reliability, that ANR's relation with the proxies of other accounting constructs is consistent with theory, and that ANR's sensitivity to percentage changes of accrual components is consistent with a subjective ordinal ranking of the components' reliability from prior literature.
Item Open Access Exceeding the Threshold: Analysis of Public Information Transfer using Instrumental Variables(2014-04-16) Inder, GabrielleThis paper examines how information transfer about contamination levels found at brownfield sites capitalizes into nearby property values. More specifically, a hedonic model is used to test the impact on housing transaction prices when a binary measure (i.e. exceeding a threshold or not) or a continuous measure (i.e. chemical levels) is used. In the analysis, I exploit the variation in the contaminant thresholds, caused by regulatory conditions defined by the state of Massachusetts, holding the contaminant level constant. As thresholds are tied to neighborhood attributes in areas surrounding brownfields, threshold exceedance is potentially correlated to unobserved factors that impact housing values. An instrumental variables approach is used to create variation in threshold exceedance through the use of an instrument that measures the presence to underground aquifers. After instrumenting for threshold exceedance, my estimates indicate that a 10.8% decrease in housing values occurs when a contaminant threshold is exceeded, while the continuous measures of toxicity indicate a negative but insignificant effect. These findings suggest that policy makers should consider information conveyance when creating policies to inform homeowners of pollution presence, as improved information provision may increase public awareness about local environmental concerns.Item Open Access Interpretable Almost-Matching Exactly with Instrumental Variables(2019) Liu, YamengWe aim to create the highest possible quality of treatment-control matches for categorical data in the potential outcomes framework.
The method proposed in this work aims to match units on a weighted Hamming distance, taking into account the relative importance of the covariates; To match units on as many relevant variables as possible, the algorithm creates a hierarchy of covariate combinations on which to match (similar to downward closure), in the process solving an optimization problem for each unit in order to construct the optimal matches. The algorithm uses a single dynamic program to solve all of the units' optimization problems simultaneously. Notable advantages of our method over existing matching procedures are its high-quality interpretable matches, versatility in handling different data distributions that may have irrelevant variables, and ability to handle missing data by matching on as many available covariates as possible. We also adapt the matching framework by using instrumental variables (IV) to the presence of observed categorical confounding that breaks the randomness assumptions and propose an approximate algorithm which speedily generates high-quality interpretable solutions.We show that our algorithms construct better matches than other existing methods on simulated datasets, produce interesting results in applications to crime intervention and political canvassing.
