Adequate equitable recruitment of underrepresented groups in clinical research and trials is a national problem and remains a daunting challenge to translating research discoveries into effective healthcare practices. Engagement, recruitment, and retention (ER&R) training programs for Clinical Research Professionals (CRPs) often focus on policies and regulations. Although some training on the importance of diversity and inclusion in clinical research participation has recently been developed, there remains a need for training that couples critical equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) concepts with skill development in effective recruitment and retention strategies, regulations, and best practices.Approach and methods
We developed the ER&R Certificate program as a holistic approach to provide Duke University CRPs the opportunity to build competency in gap areas and to increase comfort in championing equitable partnerships with clinical research participants. The thirteen core and elective courses include blended learning elements, such as e-learning and wiki journaling prompts, to facilitate meaningful discussions. Pre- and post-assessments administered to CRP program participants and their managers assessed program impact on CRP skills in ER&R tasks and comfort in equitable, diverse, and inclusive engagement of clinical research participants.Results and discussion
Results from the first two cohorts indicate that CRPs perceived growth in their own comfort with program learning objectives, especially those centered on participant partnership and EDI principles, and most managers witnessed growth in competence and responsibility for ER&R-related tasks. Results suggest value in offering CRPs robust training programs that integrate EDI and ER&R training.Item Open Access Estuarine Ingress of the Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus(2008-04-21) Ogburn, Matthew BryanThis dissertation investigated ingress of postlarval blue crabs Callinectes sapidus to the Newport River estuary, North Carolina, USA. Data from C. similis, Menippe mercenaria, Pachygrapsus transversus, and Arenaeus cribrarius are included in some chapters for comparison. Changes in tolerance to low salinity were examined by: 1) exposing postlarvae (megalopae) collected in coastal and estuarine areas to a range of salinities and 2) determining the cue that stimulates acclimation of coastal megalopae to low salinities, the time to acclimation, and the decrease in salinity necessary for acclimation. Coastal megalopae were less tolerant to salinities of 5 and 10 than megalopae from the estuary. Coastal megalopae became acclimated to low salinities within 12 h when salinity was reduced from 35 to 31. Spatial patterns in abundance during ingress were investigated simultaneously in coastal and estuarine areas. Coastal distributions were determined using nighttime surface plankton tows at slack water after ebb tide and slack water after flood tide on four nights; two each during spring and neap tides. Estuarine distributions were determined using nightly settlement on 'hog's hair' collectors. C. sapidus megalopae were most abundant at the coast east of Beaufort Inlet, but settlement was restricted to western channels of the estuary. Species-specific patterns in abundance were maintained during two spring/neap cycles, possibly due to interactions between larval behavior and physical forcing. Biophysical mechanisms of estuarine ingress were investigated by comparing nightly abundance in coastal and estuarine areas with environmental variables. Comparisons were made using cross-correlation and cross-fourier analyses. High estuarine abundances were associated with wind-driven estuarine inflow and nighttime flood tides. The seasonal pattern of estuarine ingress was strongly associated with the seasonal pattern of alongshore wind stress, suggesting that inter-annual variations in atmospheric forcing may determine the yearly abundance of megalopae arriving in estuarine nursery habitats. The effect of sampling interval on annual megalopal abundance estimates was determined using an 11-year dataset of nightly settlement. Variability in abundance estimates increased with increasing sampling interval. Switching from a one day to two day sampling interval resulted in a 20 % decrease in the likelihood of detecting a significant correlation between annual abundance and CPUE in the North Carolina blue crab pot fishery.Item Open Access North American tree migration paced by fecundity and recruitment through contrasting mechanisms east and west(2020-04-24) Sharma, ShubhiGlobal forest diebacks are the beginnings of change that will be controlled by tree migration, which combines two uncertain processes, tree fecundity and recruitment. Knowledge of how, and where, tree migration can proceed is critical for adaptive management of forest resources and conservation efforts. The initial stage of seed production is erratic and poorly observed, with most studies limited to few trees, few species and few sites. At the next stage, tree recruitment is typically too sporadic to characterize at landscape scales. Neither seed production nor seedling recruitment have been quantified or linked to climate and habitat variables at scales needed to evaluate the changes happening now or to anticipate the diversity and structure of 21st century forests. As part of the masting inference and forecasting (MASTIF) project, we synthesized continental-scale data for tree fecundity gathered over the last half century and combined it with forest inventories to connect adult trees (basal area) to i) fecundity (seeds per basal area) and ii) recruitment (recruits per seed). A dynamic model fitted to >107 tree years of fecundity data provided estimates tree-by-year fecundity. A predictive distribution for the continent combines the fitted mode with 105 trees from Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA), Canadian National Forest Inventory(CNFI) and the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). Results show continent-wide migration as a balance between regional shifts in fecundity that can diverge from conditions that favour establishment, with clear differences in eastern and western North America. In moist eastern states, the geographic centers for fecundity are most commonly displaced south of tree basal area for the same species. This relationship would be expected if optimal conditions for seed production lie to the south of optimal conditions for growth and survival, despite potential benefits of warming poleward. In the dry west and north-central, fecundity is for some species displaced northwest of tree basal area, as would be expected if the high-rainfall north-west is predisposed to lead migration as the continent warms. The east-west contrast diminishes at the transition from fecundity to recruits per seed, which tends to be shifted north in both regions. The net continent-wide migration by contrasting east-west controls highlight interactions, with fecundity primed to lead tree migration in the west, and fecundity slowing progress in the east. The possibility of fecundity limitation offers one explanation for migration lag in species expected to track climate warming by expanding poleward.
