Item Open Access Condoms and Consent: Exploring the Relationship Between Sexual Health and Sexual Violence on College Campuses(2017-04-29) Weisman, IlanaCollege campuses are ripe for investigation about sexual health and sexual violence: students know very little about sexual health and routinely engage in risky sexual behaviors, and one in four women will experience sexual violence while a student. However, if better sexual health leads to increased women’s agency and self-determination, and if sexual violence stems from socialized power dynamics that diminish self-determination, then it follows that increased sexual health should at least correlate with, if not cause, reduced levels of sexual violence. Fittingly, this thesis questions if increased sexual health associates with reduced sexual violence on college campuses. To investigate this connection, I analyze 59 members of the American Association of Universities by compiling data about their sexual health promotion, sexual violence prevention, and medical resources, as well as their Clery Act Compliant reported rates of sexual violence. I use a statistical approach to draw correlations and posit relationships between indicators of a campus’s sexual health and its reported rates of sexual violence, which I discuss alongside the phenomenon of underreporting sexual violence. This thesis will culminate by providing policy recommendations to universities on how to better their sexual health promotion and sexual violence prevention efforts, as well as to the federal government on how to reform the Clery Act sex crime reporting process to make Clery reports a stronger gauge of campus sexual violence.Item Embargo Imaging "Comfort Women": Girl Statue of Peace (2011) in the Expanded Field(2024) Park, SaeHimThe Statue of Peace (2011), known as the Girl Statue in Korean, memorializes the “comfort women,” victims of military sexual violence in the colonial and occupied territories under the Japanese Empire (c.1931-1945). Created by artists Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung, the Girl Statue is a life-size, bronze, freestanding sculpture of an empty chair next to a seated girl, confronting the site of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. Since its installation in 2011, the Girl Statue image has proliferated across media, scale, form, and function by artists and the public. The Girl Statue has been reproduced as replicas, watercolor paintings, logo images, gigantic balloons, plastic miniatures, coinage, soft dolls, bracelets, 3D toys, wooden DIY models, LEGO, performances, AR Challenge on social media, and even tattoos.
This dissertation explores the expansion of the Girl Statue over the ten years (2011-2021). Despite its aim to raise awareness of the “comfort women” issue and foster solidarity, the Girl Statue has served the desires and motivations of its makers, consumers, and participants. The multiplication of the Girl Statues symbolically compensated for the dwindling numbers of “comfort women” victims. The narrative of vanishing victims is exemplified by novels and films that underscore the decreasing numbers of the last “comfort women” as an endangered group in need of rescue. The immediacy and intimacy of the Girl Statues as collectible souvenirs grant a sense of satisfaction that one is contributing to an important cause for justice. Through a close analysis of site visits, conversations, newspapers, television, social media, archives, and symposia, this research explores how our engagement with the Girl Statue shapes and reflects our values regarding humanity. The uncomfortable burden persists for the “comfort women,” who, in becoming images, continue to comfort the present.
Item Open Access Student Knowledge and Understanding of Sexual Violence: A Case Study at Duke University(2016-01-07) Becker, EricaAn estimated 20-25% of women experience sexual assault while at college. In response, institutions of higher education are improving their policies and working to educate students on the issue. The purpose of this study is to examine whether undergraduate students at Duke University know and understand the University’s Student Sexual Misconduct Policy on consent and sexual violence. Data gathered from student surveys (n = 320) yielded mixed results on respondents’ knowledge of the policy. In addition, though students had greater understanding of sexual violence than hypothesized, respondents lacked understanding of the role of alcohol in consent. Statistical analyses showed that men, varsity athletes, freshmen and non-LGBTQ students were more likely to misunderstand sexual violence, as measured through responses to scenario questions on the student survey. Recommendations of this study to the University include adding information on alcohol and consent to the Student Sexual Misconduct Policy, improving outreach and follow up for educational programming, and implementing scenario questions in future surveys and training materials.
