This is an undergraduate senior thesis submitted in 2014 by Annie Niehaus, a student
at Pomona College, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor
of Arts in Public Policy Analysis - Chemistry. This work was advised by Robert Cook-Deegan
at Duke University. It was funded in part by the Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy
summer undergraduate research fellowship and by the National Human Genome Research
Institute through grant P50 HG003391.
