Abstract
This report presents mixed-method research conducted by Duke University Libraries to inform the 2026 homepage redesign. The study integrated a literature review of academic library design best practices, an environmental scan of fourteen peer institutions, and student focus groups including card sort and wireframing activities. Findings across all methods converge to validate a user-centered design approach emphasizing search centrality, visual simplification, and task-oriented navigation. Key recommendations include positioning search as the primary homepage element, implementing low-density layouts to reduce cognitive load, surfacing high-demand services (hours, research support, account access) in persistent locations, and de-prioritizing promotional content (news, events, special collections). The report provides evidence-based guidelines for creating an accessible, efficient homepage that supports Duke students' research and academic tasks.
