The United States electricity grid faces a critical visibility gap, while transmission infrastructure is monitored in near real-time, the millions of miles of distribution lines delivering power to end-use customers remain largely invisible to grid operators. This blind spot is increasingly dangerous as distributed energy resources introduce bidirectional power flows that aging monitoring systems were never designed to handle. In this project, we conducted a comprehensive cost analysis and technology comparison for GridVisibility, Inc., a Colorado-based startup that repurposes existing broadband cable power supplies co-located on utility poles to deliver high-fidelity, millisecond-resolution real-time grid monitoring at the distribution level through the deployment of proprietary sensors and an online analytics platform. We benchmarked their metrics against more than twenty competitors across five technology categories, evaluating performance metrics including sampling rate, latency, and bandwidth. Our analysis finds that communication architecture (not sensor hardware) is the dominant driver of cost and scalability, and that GridVisibility's hybrid fiber-coaxial approach achieves superior performance at a fraction of the deployment cost of alternatives. Using their 2024 pilot deployment in Vermont, we identified applications in data center management, fault detection, DER integration, wildfire prevention, and grid cybersecurity. Leveraging adjacent broadband infrastructure offers a scalable, capital-efficient pathway to closing the distribution visibility gap across the United States.
