dc.description.abstract

Antoine François Prévost (1697–1763), The English Philosopher Le Philosophe anglais (1732–1739), relating the adventures and travails of Cleveland, a son of Oliver Cromwell, was perhaps the most read French novel of the 1730s. But owing to the five-year interval separating its first four volumes from the last three, it was only partially translated into English. This new, amply annotated, translation by Philip Stewart is thus also the first complete translation of the novel ever made available to an English-reading public.
