Francis Collins, interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, Rockville, MD, 12 April 2012. Francis Collins enjoyed an impressive career as a human geneticist at the University of Michigan—developing powerful methods for modern molecular genetics and co-discovering (with Lap-Chee Tsui) the genetic basis of cystic fibrosis—before rising to the directorship of the National Center for Human Genome Research (NCHGR) in 1993. In this role, he replaced James Watson as head of the NIH HGP. The NCHGR became the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) in 1997. While at NHGRI, Collins founded the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) in 1994 and also became a chief proponent of the Bermuda Principles, fostering their adoption as government policies both in the U.S. and abroad. Collins became director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2009. This transcript is available beginning 1 July 2014.
