dc.description.abstract

The shift towards decarbonization is a long-term secular trend, with profound implications on how we interact with the world. To put it into perspective, over 140 countries and 4,300 public companies have committed to achieving net zero, a significant increase from just a few years ago.

The appetite for investment in climate-oriented strategies has grown alongside company and country commitments. Assets under management (AUM) in climate strategies have expanded exponentially from $93 billion in 2018 to $573 billion in 2023.

However, up to this point most climate-oriented public equity funds have not invested in companies where the opportunity is greatest - in the “picks and shovels” of the energy transition. These companies are enabling the world to meet net zero commitments by offering products, services and mature technologies that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Established in 2022, ScopeFour Capital is a climate- focused investment management firm that fills this void by actively investing in economically viable public companies that are scaling currently impactful solutions and technologies.

The current challenge to grow the firm is threefold:

  1. The sales cycle for institutional investors is typically 18 to 36 months and oftentimes longer for a newer entity and unproven track record.
  2. Investing in climate solutions is a newer segment of economic growth. Investors need education on how and where to place it in their portfolios.
  3. ESG and climate investing has received recent political backlash, which has dampened interest. Further, recent economic dynamics have been challenging for the climate space overall due to interest rates and inflation. Marketing communications is a critical element of success, particularly when introducing an innovative and sometimes controversial concept (climate) for traditional institutional investors.

The Masters Project’s objective is to assist ScopeFour in identifying and targeting the right audience for client acquisition by developing a comprehensive marketing communications plan. In addition to establishing key messaging, the plan also identifies an effective communications and content strategy across media channels. The project culminates in a timeline and budget to determine metrics for success.
