Abstract

This thesis is submitted for the Doctor of Ministry degree at Duke Divinity School. It explores the role of experiential education as a formational and transformative approach to Christian discipleship within the local church. Grounded in personal narrative, educational theory, and biblical theology, the study argues that meaningful faith formation occurs most effectively through lived experience, intentional reflection, and faithful response rather than through the transmission of information alone.

Research highlights how experiential learning, particularly in high-stakes environments, can lead to deep, lasting transformation. The study further contends that experiential education is deeply aligned with the biblical narrative. Through analysis of both Old and New Testament texts, it shows that God consistently forms individuals and communities through encounter, participation, and reflection. From Moses’ calling and Samuel’s discernment to the ministry of Jesus and the practices of the early church, discipleship emerges as an inherently experiential process. Additionally, the thesis explores contemporary applications of experiential education within modern Christian settings, highlighting practices such as worship, service-learning, storytelling, and communal engagement.

Ultimately, this research argues that when intentionally integrated, experiential education provides a dynamic and adaptable framework for cultivating mature disciples of Jesus Christ. By engaging the whole person and fostering ongoing transformation, the church is better equipped to fulfill its mission, strengthen community, and embody the gospel in a complex and changing worlds.
