Abstract

Bird blinds are a rapidly expanding form of community-based ecotourism in China, yet their broader ecological impacts remain poorly understood. This study evaluates whether the establishment of bird blinds is associated with changes in local forest cover from 2001 to 2024. Using survey data from 65 sites across 10 provinces, we combined remote sensing datasets with time series analysis to quantify forest loss within a 500 m buffer around each site. Logistic regression was used to identify drivers of bird blind site selection and to construct matched control sites with comparable environmental and anthropogenic conditions. We applied before–after comparisons, trend analysis, and event-study approaches to assess temporal dynamics of forest loss. Results show no evidence of a pre-establishment trend and no immediate increase in forest loss following establishment. While forest loss trajectories increased over time after establishment, similar increases were observed at matched control sites, and no significant change in mean forest loss was detected. These patterns indicate that post-establishment increases are not unique to bird blind locations. Overall, our findings suggest that observed forest loss dynamics are more likely driven by broader landscape-level processes rather than a causal effect of bird blind development. This study highlights the importance of incorporating counterfactual comparisons when evaluating the ecological impacts of emerging ecotourism practices and provides a framework for assessing human–environment interactions in rapidly changing landscapes.
