Item Open Access Emerging Perspectives on Climate Risk: Current Business Leaders & Future Business Leaders(2018-04-27) Blake, Adam; Bonney, Devon; Geoffrey, Luke; Gibson, Amanda; Duggan, AmandaIncreasingly, global companies have to balance short-term objectives with longer-term opportunities in response to a changing climate. Corporations have a great deal to gain from reframing climate-related risks into opportunities for growth, innovation, and operational efficiency. In turn, business schools have an opportunity to train emerging business leaders in mitigation and response strategies to address environmental and climate-related risk. This multi-faceted research project examines how corporations view non-financial risk, particularly as it relates to climate change and in turn, how MBA students – as a proxy for emerging business leaders – perceive climate-related risks and opportunities. Results indicate that corporations are aligned in their focus on non-financial risks as a category but vary across industries on the importance and relevance of what constitutes ‘material’. MBA students place greater value on mitigating environmental and social disruption risk when primed of its importance but do not feel adequately prepared to address emergent social and environmental issues as corporate professionals.Item Open Access Finding Meaning in Organized Religion: A Practical Theology for the Church's Mission with Millennials(2020) Mentzer, Timothy AndrewThis thesis develops a practical theology for mission with Millennials. This theology engages in an Empirical Task as it gathers data; engages in an Interpretive Task as it reviews the multi-disciplinary conclusions drawn for that data; engages in a Normative Task of identifying theological norms; and engages in a Pragmatic Task of shaping a practical theological response. The method used for this task is described by Richard Osmer in his book “Practical Theology: An Introduction.” Millennials who are unaffiliated with the church are the subject of this project. The project answers the question, “How does the church engage in frontier mission with Millennials who are unaffiliated with mainline congregational ministry?” Three threads will be used in answering this question: the common narrative used by Millennials to describe their lives; the spiritual condition of “not being enough;” and the journey to adulthood.
Item Open Access Grading the Army’s Choice of Senior Leaders(2018) Fust, GeorgeThis study seeks to determine how the Army institutionally selects its 3 and 4-star officers. The central focus, What patterns are evident in the output of the Army’s 3 and 4-star selection process? has three main findings: 1. The Army has institutional preferences, 2. Multiple paths are possible to the senior leader level, 3. The Army’s most preferred path is operational and command experience. These findings were the result of a comprehensive analysis of a database developed utilizing the standardized resumes of 3 and 4-star generals who have served or retired after 1985. The database, along with the results presented here can help determine if the Army is selecting the right senior leaders and meeting its senior leader development goals. In addition, by understanding the breadth of experience of the Army’s senior leaders, we can identify potential shortcomings in experience or skills required to meet current and future threats. The Army is tasked with defending the nation, we must therefore continually assess how it adapts and evolves with contemporary events and adversaries. The database, while extensive by itself, serves as a starting point for future researchers. The paper’s narrow lens will offer insight into the Army process of selecting senior leaders and provide a follow-on analysis template.
