Item Open Access An Information Systems Strategy for the Environmental Conservation Community(2008-04-25T20:55:48Z) Barker, KristinAs the cause of environmental conservation emerges as a global priority, the need for a practical information systems strategy shared among conservation organizations becomes imperative. Historically, researchers and practitioners in conservation have met their own information management and analysis needs with inevitable variation in methodology, semantics, data formats and quality. Consequently, conservation organizations have been unable to systematically assess conditions and set informed priorities at various scales, measure performance of their projects and improve practices through adaptive management. Moreover, the demands on conservation are changing such that the bottom-up approach to information systems will become an increasing constraint to effective environmental problem solving. Where we have historically focused on the protection of “important” places and species and more recently “biodiversity,” conservation is moving to a systems view, specifically ecosystem-based management, where relationships and process are as important as the individual elements. In parallel, awareness of the human dependency on functioning natural systems is on the rise and with it the need to explicitly value ecosystem services and inform tradeoffs. Climate change requires conservation to develop dynamic adaptation scenarios at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Finally, the business of conservation is under increased pressure to account for its spending and objectively measure outcomes of its strategies. All of these changes translate to growing, not shrinking, demands on information and information systems. In response to these challenges, this research presents an information systems strategy for the environmental conservation community. It proposes the development of a distributed systems infrastructure with end-user tools and shared services that support standardized datasets. Key strategies include removing the barriers to information sharing, providing valuable tools to data producers and directly supporting heterogeneity in conservation datasets. The strategy concludes with a call for high-level management involvement in information systems strategy and collaborative investment in implementation by the conservation community, partners in government and donors. Without these steps, conservation as an industry may find itself ill-equipped to meet the changing needs of people and nature.Item Open Access Behavioral Perspectives on Organizational Change: Practice Adoption, Product Culling, and Technological Search(2016) Wilson, Alex JamesThis dissertation explores the complex process of organizational change, applying a behavioral lens to understand change in processes, products, and search behaviors. Chapter 1 examines new practice adoption, exploring factors that predict the extent to which routines are adopted “as designed” within the organization. Using medical record data obtained from the hospital’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system I develop a novel measure of the “gap” between routine “as designed” and routine “as realized.” I link this to a survey administered to the hospital’s professional staff following the adoption of a new EHR system and find that beliefs about the expected impact of the change shape fidelity of the adopted practice to its design. This relationship is more pronounced in care units with experienced professionals and less pronounced when the care unit includes departmental leadership. This research offers new insights into the determinants of routine change in organizations, in particular suggesting the beliefs held by rank-and-file members of an organization are critical in new routine adoption. Chapter 2 explores changes to products, specifically examining culling behaviors in the mobile device industry. Using a panel of quarterly mobile device sales in Germany from 2004-2009, this chapter suggests that the organization’s response to performance feedback is conditional upon the degree to which decisions are centralized. While much of the research on product exit has pointed to economic drivers or prior experience, these central finding of this chapter—that performance below aspirations decreases the rate of phase-out—suggests that firms seek local solutions when doing poorly, which is consistent with behavioral explanations of organizational action. Chapter 3 uses a novel text analysis approach to examine how the allocation of attention within organizational subunits shapes adaptation in the form of search behaviors in Motorola from 1974-1997. It develops a theory that links organizational attention to search, and the results suggest a trade-off between both attentional specialization and coupling on search scope and depth. Specifically, specialized unit attention to a more narrow set of problems increases search scope but reduces search depth; increased attentional coupling also increases search scope at the cost of depth. This novel approach and these findings help clarify extant research on the behavioral outcomes of attention allocation, which have offered mixed results.
Item Open Access Commercializing Kelp: Marketing and Growth Strategies for the Crop of the Future(2022-04-22) Cappelli, AaronDomestic kelp as a cultivated crop and as a consumer good in the US faces a variety of hurdles as it scales to meet the demands of the US market. Atlantic Sea Farms (ASF) has led the way in establishing kelp in the US and has been successful in bringing innovative consumer goods products made from kelp to the market despite these challenges. I embarked on this project to identify potential barriers to kelp adoption and scaling, and to create strategies to overcome those barriers. The studies that make up this project explored: considerations and recommendations for a new product launch and go-to-market strategy, a line-extension marketing strategy, and also analyzed policy and other geographic factors relevant to future kelp cultivation expansion potential in Maine and Massachusetts. When developing the go-to-market strategy I explored market size and growth for the respective product categories, potential retail/restaurant/CPG partnerships, and a tiered rollout strategy. In the line-extension study, I explored targeting, differentiation, and engagement strategies to successfully introduce the new product variations to the market. Using data from the U.S. airline industry, I combine reduced-form analysis with recent econometric advances in the estimation of dynamic games to examine the market-level and industry-level behavior of oligopolistic firms. The first essay presents a framework for sensitivity analysis in merger simulation. The second essay continues the market-level analysis of merger effects by examining how airline mergers influence price dispersion. The third essay shifts focus to industry-level investment behavior, examining the role played by bankruptcy policy in disciplining capital investment.
Item Open Access Essays on Firm Innovation in Dynamic Product Markets: Examining Competitive Interactions During Technological Commercialization(2018) Du, Kevin KaiHow can firms gain competitive advantage from available technologies is a key question in strategy. In my dissertation, I develop new theory and provide evidence to show that a firm’s focus in selective technological areas may play a central role of creating competitive advantage in industries with rapid product turnover. Firms commit limited resources when selecting which technologies to develop, affecting the composition of their product portfolios and allowing some firms to subsequently capture greater value relative to others. I examine how firm attention to technologies within an industry affect their ability to swiftly incorporate them into products (essay 1); establish a theoretical foundation for firm-to-firm matching in the market for alliances (essay 2); develop an econometric methodology based on the insights from a firm-to-firm matching market (essay 3); and investigate how common technological interests attract partners in the market for interfirm collaboration (essay 4). Across four essays, I find that competitive advantage varies with the firm’s technological composition, its current focal area of technological development, and the collection of potential alliance partners. These findings contribute to understanding conditions under which a firm captures value from the component technologies scattered across its industry, and the key tradeoffs associated with allocating its technological focus.
Item Open Access European Market Evaluation for Long-Duration Energy Storage(2021-04-29) Guebert, Davis; Davis, KathrynLong-duration energy storage (LoDES) technologies and their global use cases are quickly advancing, with non-lithium-ion technology solutions being optimized for long-duration grid applications (>24hrs of continuous energy on a single charge). These technologies can serve as bi-directional power plants located in almost any market and scaled to match energy infrastructure globally. We focused our research on European energy markets and how LoDES companies can best position themselves against competitors. Our market assessment evaluates the current energy landscape, including policies, generation mix, stakeholders, and the market's lucrative potential, such as revenue staking, wholesale prices, and competitor criteria. We identified six potential European energy storage markets from which we classified a three-country subset to develop go-to-market strategies, detailing funding opportunities and potential partnerships. This analysis aims to give LoDES companies tangible direction to pursue European market entry.Item Open Access Initiating Orvis' Sustainability Strategy: Identifying Strategic Priorities & Sustainability Champions Within the Business(2017-04-28) Gore, Barbara; Pita, Lili; Hutter, DanOrvis is America’s oldest mail-order outfitter and longest continually-operating fly-fishing business with more than $340 million in sales, offering a wide assortment of fly-fishing, hunting, and sporting goods. The company dedicates itself to personal responsibility and strives to the restore, enhance and protect wild places; however, Orvis does not currently have an overarching sustainability strategy. In order to fill this gap, our research strives to capture an understanding of the perceptions, attitudes, and priorities of Orvis associates, managers, and executives with regard to sustainability initiatives. Insights gathered through the creation and distribution of employee engagement surveys, along with industry best practice research and an analysis of Orvis’ Higg Index results, will be used to develop key components of a long-term Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.Item Open Access Keeping it Beta: Social Innovation & The Black Church. A Case for Strategy, Design & Social Change.(2022) Cudjoe-Wilkes, Gabriella ElizabethGod created . . . and it was good. People of faith are a part of God’s work of creation that from the beginning of time has created and innovated without fail. A mantra of the ecumenical Black Church is that we serve a God who “keeps making a way out of no way!” Out of conditions of scarcity, malice, and hardship, enslaved Africans living in America created possibilities and opportunities for themselves. Fast forward to 2022, and that spirit of innovation still exists within the stories and lived experiences of African Americans across time.
In this work I will suggest that innovation must continue to be an intentional practice of the black church. Given the monumental changes brought about by the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I am compelling leaders to move towards the work of innovation and to illuminate opportunities of innovation within church environments. I would argue that the ecumenical Black Church has led many movements of social impact and connectivity yet our language for describing that kind of work has been too limited. I’m interested in narrating and interpreting the work of the ecumenical Black Church through the lens and discipline of social innovation, traditioned innovation, design thinking, and strategy.
We are at an intersection and inflection point in 2022. Virtual sanctuaries have replaced physical ones. The average parishioner has not walked into a sanctuary in the past two years. How does that change our concept of innovation, outreach and strategy? As a former publicist, current brand strategist, and church planter, I am very interested in the way the ecumenical Black Church is being received in society right now. I’m interested in threading who the ecumenical Black Church has been and who it can be. This is a renaissance moment. Let’s join together and see what we can create. Let’s dream together.
Item Open Access Leadership for Thriving: A Framework to Lead the Business Community to Sustainable Behaviors(2023-04-25) Olivares, MagdalenaClimate change is a complex problem whose solution is still far from being on track. Although we have advanced a lot in terms of knowledge and awareness of the problem, we are struggling to transition to sustainable actions. Corporations have the key to unleash a substantial potential contribution to facing this challenge moving forward. Developing new business models that move their operations away from current environmental damage is needed. Their potential to leverage their connections with consumers and other stakeholders, educating and influencing them to be part of the solution, and joining efforts to adjust lifestyles and preferences for sustainable consumption also presents a huge opportunity. For these challenges, corporations need to face the transition from a technical to an adaptative approach. But corporations are not prepared to run this challenge on their own; integrating the environmental impact in the business model requires the support of environmental experts. This research is based on the hypothesis that there is an opportunity to enhance sustainable behavior transformation by improving communication and collaboration between business and environmental professionals. With this purpose, the research was done through a qualitative comparative analysis that looks to contrast the perspective and resources those professionals have with respect to climate change, looking for the interconnection of joint possibilities that can be approached in a more collaborative manner. The ecological self maturity, nature experience, and knowledge of environmental professionals make them the best candidates to support corporate change. But there is a learning challenge for environmental professionals as well, since technical acumen is not enough to lead such large and complex adaptative changes in human systems in the corporate world. This framework aims at providing a tool for environmental professionals to effectively hone their skills to lead and communicate with corporate audiences and guide them towards effective actions to tackle environmental change. Leadership for Thriving combines this perspective of leadership and inspiring storytelling with the optimistic approach of the breakthrough movement of thriving, which inspires the examples and reflections of this proposal.Item Open Access The Politics of Foreign Military Basing(2020) Brown, Joseph WForeign military bases are anomalies in a world of sovereign states. Why do major powers station their finite military forces to protect other countries and how does the distribution of these bases relate to a country’s grand strategy? Why do host-nations give up their sovereignty and allow foreign forces, capable of existential violence, to deploy within their borders? This dissertation takes a mixed method approach to each of these questions. For the first, I combine descriptive case studies relating the basing postures of five major powers and to their respective grand strategies with a quantitative analysis of the correlates of the US military basing network. To answer the second, I test the role of host-nation security conditions on US military access and then conduct an in-depth process tracing of US-Philippine basing relations. I find that foreign military bases are essential for super-power status and are an arena for great power competition. I conclude that the US foreign basing posture is strongly aligned with American trade relationships and against US enemies. For host-nation motivations, I conclude that security threats to the host-nation matter, but not uniformly. External threats have the greatest influence in increasing foreign military access, but low-intensity revolutionary threats actually tend to decrease a host-nation’s willingness to accommodate foreign forces.
