Abstract

China has shown increased engagement in International Higher Education (IHE), an interest motivated by a tremendous demand among both Chinese and international students. Conducted at a full-scale Sino-foreign joint-venture university (JVU) in China, this study seeks to explore the motivation of first-year international students for applying to and attending Sino-foreign JVU in China. A second related question investigates what they expect to experience prior to matriculation. Qualitative data collection and analyses suggest that international students at a Sino-foreign joint-venture university were motivated by a strong desire to distinguish themselves for integrative, international signaling, and instrumental purposes, and expect to change as a result of studying and living in an intercultural environment in China.

Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Intercultural Communication at Duke Kunshan University

Dr. Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Intercultural Communication at Duke Kunshan University (DKU). She is Assistant Director of the Language and Culture Center for the Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) program and co-director of the Third-Space humanities research lab. Her research lies at the intersection of applied linguistics, language pedagogy, and intercultural communication with a focus on how multilinguals negotiate identities and socialize into globalized workplaces and educational contexts. Previously she held an Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellowship at Oberlin College, US, and has directed intensive study abroad Chinese programs including the Critical Language Scholarship program. .

张欣博士任昆山杜克大学中文与跨文化交际助理教授、语言文化中心助理主任(主管中文作为第二语言项目)、第三空间人文研究室联合主任。曾获美国Andrew W. Mellon基金会博士后奖学金并任欧柏林大学中文客座助理教授,并曾担任美国关键语言奖学金等多个中文暑期留学项目的主任。她的研究领域包括应用语言学,语言教学法与跨文化交际,侧重于国际化职场与教育环境中多语者身份构建与协商。
